Healthy Teeth for Healthy Heart

Healthy Teeth for Healthy HeartEating right, getting plenty of exercise, managing stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can all help you reduce your risk of heart disease. However, research suggests that you could be doing more. West Hollywood dentist, Poneh Ghasri DDS, can help you learn more about how your dental health can affect your heart health.

Brushing and flossing your teeth are the best ways to keep your teeth looking and feeling great, and your friends will certainly appreciate your fresher breath. However, these good dental hygiene habits will also reduce your risk of heart disease. When you don’t brush and floss frequently enough, plaque builds up on your teeth. Plaque harbors dangerous bacteria, which infects your gums. This infection is highly treatable in its earliest form but left untreated will progress into periodontal disease. The bacteria associated with periodontal disease have been associated with chronic, low-level body-wide inflammation, which has been found to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The American Dental Association recommends twice-daily brushing with a soft-bristled brush, flossing daily, and rinsing with antimicrobial mouth rinse to reduce the overall level of bacteria in the mouth. Replace your toothbrush every three months or when the bristles show signs of wear. You should also visit your dentist at least twice a year for dental exams and professional cleanings.

If you have any symptoms of gum disease, including red, swollen or bleeding gums, contact Dr. Afar, West Hollywood periodontist, for a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan in order to restore your gum health.
