Mistakes You Make in Your Dental Care

Mistakes You Make in Your Dental CareWhile you may feel that you are taking good care of your teeth, there are some common oral hygiene habits that can actually cause harm to your teeth or leave something to be desired for a completely healthy mouth.

Tooth brushing mistakes may include using the wrong type of toothbrush, keeping the toothbrush for too long, brushing too hard, and not brushing for long enough. Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles and replace the toothbrush about every three to four months or when it shows signs of wear. Use soft, gentle motions when brushing, especially around the gum line. Be sure to brush teeth for two full minutes, twice a day.

When you brush can be important. Brushing immediately after eating a meal or drinking acidic beverages can wear away protective enamel that is weakened by the acids. Drink water and wait about a half hour to brush so the saliva can have time to neutralize the acids.

Other dental care mistakes involve dental floss, such as avoiding flossing and improper flossing techniques. Flossing removes excess food, plaque, and bacteria between the teeth that brushing misses. Be sure to use gentle pressure and do not dig, especially at the gum line.

Another bad mistake is to avoid regular dental examinations. Take time to make an appointment with our West Hollywood dentist for an exam and professional cleaning to reach places you may miss at home and to detect potential problems before they become serious.
