Oral Hygiene Tips

Oral Hygiene Tips

By brushing and flossing, you can prevent plaque from building up and tartar from developing. Plaque and tartar contain oral bacteria that release acids that decay the enamel on your teeth. This leads to cavities. These bacteria can also irritate gum tissues and lead to gum disease.

Keeping your teeth clean is one of the best ways to prevent dental disease.

1. Brush and floss daily.
The most basic rule for good dental hygiene is also one that can be easy to get wrong. Many people brush too hard or too quickly, which can put their teeth at risk, or they skip flossing. Brush twice a day using a light touch, a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste, and spend about two minutes cleaning each surface of your teeth. Finish by cleaning between your teeth with an interdental cleaner or dental floss.

2. Use antibacterial mouthwash.
Even excellent brushing habits cannot remove all oral bacteria. Swishing with antibacterial mouthwash each time you brush offers an added layer of protection for your smile.

3. Schedule a dental cleaning at least every six months.

Regular dental cleanings can remove buildup from hard-to-reach places you might miss, and during these checkups, we can spot early signs of dental disease, allowing us to treat the problem sooner.
