Most Common Symptoms of Gum Disease

Most Common Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum disease or periodontitis begins with gum inflammation, which is more commonly known as gingivitis. Gingivitis symptoms can be easy to miss, but you might notice that your gums look puffy or swollen, and they bleed a little when you brush or floss. Your teeth might also have heavy plaque or tartar buildup, which can make them look discolored.

Without treatment, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis. This is a more advanced stage of gum disease, and the symptoms will be more noticeable. The bleeding from your gums may be more severe and likely to occur even when you are eating or spontaneously. Other common symptoms of gum disease include:

• Tender or painful gums
• Gums that seem to be pulling away from your teeth or receding
• Pus pockets forming between the teeth and the gums
• Persistent bad breath
• Teeth that are separating or loose
• A change in your bite or in the way your dentures fit
• Sores on your gums

If you smoke or chew tobacco, your gums might not bleed due to nicotine’s effects on blood vessels.

Early diagnosis can make a big difference in your prognosis. In the early stages of gum disease, a periodontal cleaning can be extremely effective in removing the plaque and tartar buildup and bacterial colonies that are irritating the gums. In later stages, a deep cleaning might be recommended as well, but you will still likely need other conservative or surgical therapies to address the damage.
